Biography

The Dirk children certainly seemed normal. They were happy, healthy, and beloved by their parents. They went to school, drank chocolate milk, and played games just like other children. They fit into their New York City neighborhood almost invisibly. Until that one day.

It was a dark and stormy day; the rain fell in torrents--except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind. Obviously they could not go outside to play. They played indoors all morning, all afternoon, and into the early evening. They were driving their poor mother crazy. She warned them to settle down. She warned them not to run in the house. But they would not listen.

Harry got the idea to scuff up his socked feet on the carpet and then tap his little sister, Maddy, shocking her with static electricity. Maddy ran around in circles until she built up a charge of her own and then reached out to zap little brother Jack. Jack cried out, rolled around on the carpet, and then inadvertantly shocked his big brother Harry who had come over to help him up. That is when it hit them. The idea to run around, build up a charge, and zap one another silly.

They ran around in a circle on that staticky carpet until they got dizzy -and then they ran some more. They ran and ran and ran until their hair stood on end and the very air around them started to snap, crackle, and pop. They finally stopped and reached out, each trying to avoid the touch of the other until, right as they made simultaneous contact a lightning bolt from the storm outside hit their house and transformed the playroom into a glowing ball of exploding blue energy.

The lights went out, the children fell down, and all went quiet.

Until their mother came running in with a flashlight. Only she did not need a flashlight. Because her three children, still smoking from scorchmarks at their fingertips, were glowing so brightly (and laughing so uproariously) it lit up the room.
